The barred owl has a distinctive call that sounds like “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?” that is unlike other owl calls. If you hear maniacal laughter coming from the woods it might be two barred owls in a courtship duet, but maybe not, so stay on your feet! These owls mate for life and have one clutch of two to three eggs a year. They are aggressive once they have chosen a nest and will chase predators away with hoots.
