The woolly mammoth lived during the Pleistocene (ice age) epoch and went extinct during the current geological epoch. One of the last line of mammoth species it’s closest living relative is the Asian elephant. Frozen carcasses in Alaska and Russia have allowed extensive research on this species which is why we know so much about how they lived.
